Feasibility of LoRa for Smart Home Indoor Localization

    Get PDF
With the advancement of low-power and low-cost wireless technologies in the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been growing rapidly in numerous areas of Industry 4.0 and smart homes. With the development of many applications for the IoT, indoor localization, i.e., the capability to determine the physical location of people or devices, has become an important component of smart homes. Various wireless technologies have been used for indoor localization includingWiFi, ultra-wideband (UWB), Bluetooth low energy (BLE), radio-frequency identification (RFID), and LoRa. The ability of low-cost long range (LoRa) radios for low-power and long-range communication has made this radio technology a suitable candidate for many indoor and outdoor IoT applications. Additionally, research studies have shown the feasibility of localization with LoRa radios. However, indoor localization with LoRa is not adequately explored at the home level, where the localization area is relatively smaller than offices and corporate buildings. In this study, we first explore the feasibility of ranging with LoRa. Then, we conduct experiments to demonstrate the capability of LoRa for accurate and precise indoor localization in a typical apartment setting. Our experimental results show that LoRa-based indoor localization has an accuracy better than 1.6 m in line-of-sight scenario and 3.2 m in extreme non-line-of-sight scenario with a precision better than 25 cm in all cases, without using any data filtering on the location estimates

Hydrogen effects on nanomechanical behavior of additively manufactured 316L stainless steels

Additive manufacturing (AM) has received considerable attention in recent years due to its ability to produce complex engineering components with reduced cost and waste, which simply cannot be made with conventional manufacturing processes. It has been reported that AM 316L austenitic stainless steel (SS) has excellent mechanical properties and possibly even breaks the strength-ductility trade-off. For practical industrial application, it is necessary to investigate the AM steel\u27s resistance to hydrogen embrittlement which is unavoidable in most strucral applications. In this work, we explore the hydrogen effects on nanomechanical responses of AM 316L SS (such as hardness, strain rate sensitivity, activation volume). The obtained results will be compared with those of conventional 316L SS and discussed in terms of hydrogen effect on plastic deformation and microstructure. Background : The purpose of this study was to investigate how educational status influences cardiovascular risk factors and care of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Methods : From Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey IV, we obtained survey results of 6,835 men and 9,067 women more than 30 years old. We performed multivariate logistic regression to compare cardiovascular risk factors and care of hypertension and diabetes respective to educational status. Results : There were disparities in cardiovascular risk factors by educational status. In men, impaired fasting glucose, high triglyceride, and smoking were less frequently found in the highest educated group than in the middle educated group. In women, the prevalence of abdominal obesity, impaired fasting glucose, high blood pressure, high triglyceride, and metabolic syndrome among the highest educated group were significantly lower. The proportion of those with proper physical activity in the highest educated group was found to be less than that of the middle educated group, regardless of gender. For care of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, disease recognition and treatment were lower among the lowest educated group in men, while these disparities were not shown in women. Instead, the lowest educated group in diabetic women received screening exams for eye and kidney complications less than the middle education group. In both genders, the high education group had a higher chance of receiving education about diabetes mellitus. Conclusion : There were educational disparities in cardiovascular risk factors and care of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The disparities were found to be different by gender.OAIID:oai:osos.snu.ac.kr:snu2013-01/102/0000052039/4SEQ:4PERF_CD:SNU2013-01EVAL_ITEM_CD:102USER_ID:0000052039ADJUST_YN:NEMP_ID:A077862DEPT_CD:806FILENAME:Educational Disparities in Distribution of Cardiovascular Risk.pdfDEPT_NM:μ˜κ³Όν•™κ³ΌEMAIL:[email protected]_YN:NCONFIRM:
